OF A FANTASY
(FOR AN ISLAND WHICH COULD BE PAXOS)
Diploma Design Thesis | Spring 2023 | Individual Academic Project | Instructor: D. Fragos
This research takes as its point of reference the island of Paxos. The starting premise is a renowned nineteenth-century geographical study in which philological inquiry and artistic study are interwoven with historiographical elements and traveler's accounts concerning Paxoi. The work culminates in the design of a video game prototype that seeks to map, transcribe, set in dialectical opposition and ultimately, to assimilate and recompose the fragmentary and intersubjective character, as well as the asynchrony and heterogeneity, of the island’s multiple readings. The aim of this research is both the pursuit of a design protocol and the finding of an interpretive schema through which the mechanisms of collective and individual memory will be activated, and within which a dynamic representation of Paxos can be constituted, one in which the geographical alternates with the anthropological, the imaginary with the real, and the personal and experiential with the historical and the mythological.
