Spiros Anemoyiannis is an architect and media artist whose interdisciplinary practice constitutes a form of research into constructed reality, processes of signification, and mechanisms of memory. His work draws on architectural methodology and digital media practice, extending across synthetic imagery, time-based media, and navigable digital environments.
At its core, his practice is structured around the formulation of protocols that function as rule-based systems of constraints and permissions. He applies these protocols through both digital and material experiments, producing a body of work that is not a fixed object but the trace of a procedure. This allows him to examine how situational contexts, identities, and spatial configurations can be reconfigured under these procedural conditions.
His work is informed by his training: he holds an Integrated Master of Architecture from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a BSc in Civil Engineering from the Technological Educational Institute of Serres. He was awarded the SNF–SART Scholarship and has participated in the cultural entrepreneurship program Art Cloud Greece, as well as in the residency program AARGH. He is currently based in Athens.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Drawing on my academic background in architecture, I use design, spatial planning, and construction as investigative tools aimed at the development of a working method. This method seeks to articulate both operative design protocols and interpretive frameworks that activate mechanisms of collective and individual memory and enable the construction of dynamic representations. Within these frameworks, the geographical shifts into the anthropological, the imaginary intersects with the real, and the personal and experiential coexist with the historical and the mythological.
My practice approaches digital images, built space, and my own recorded presence as evidence of how reality is constructed, mediated, and negotiated. At an initial stage, I assemble archives of multi-layered narratives composed of testimonies, data, conceptually charged objects, and other situated material. This corpus is subsequently subjected to protocols consisting of sequences of material and digital operations, as well as imaginative associations, through which new relations, meanings, and narratives can emerge, and existing narratives can be stressed, reframed, or reinforced.
Ultimately, my aim is to approach representation, memory, and identity as effects of infrastructures of recording, mediation, and circulation, rather than as expressions of a stable self.
