Commissioned
Project
FALL 2021
In this project, we explore the ways in which Athens is inhabited and how these patterns affect the city’s own residents. The aim of the project is to amplify the collective and individual voices of Athenian urban space. To this end, we created an online database from the collected material, which is accessible through videos on the social platform YouTube. The material was gathered between June and November 2021, through public space events, video screenings, and personal interviews. This project is part of the Art Cloud Greece program, an initiative of the Siena Art Institute, supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
A city extends in many directions. Sometimes through a functional process, other times through the organic conditions that are created within, and some other times because of the history and the past that characterize the city. Whether it grows horizontally or vertically, it always seems unable to enclose its own identity. Stories of the Athenian Stay is a project that has been developed in three parts, at least for the time being. Vertical projections, lemonade booths, online surveys and more are the broadcasting methods. The collected stories become a gathering of conversational elements, that speak in a variety of ways. In what directions is the city expanding?
Is this, after all, a search for the identity of the city? Probably, surely, the city’s streets, alleys, and walls are not enough to record that identity.
