5.55

In Thessaloniki, where grand plans and bright promises are often mentioned, the idea of the degraded and troubled western districts opposed to the aristocratic and developed eastern ones is kept alive. However, Five Point Fifty-Five, unlike various gentrification projects or other messianic solutions, is aimed at addressing social segregation issues as a stimulant factor.

In an age where social media puts well-being above all else, the building’s design program may be based on that, or it may not. This center is dedicated to promote a healthy lifestyle that includes mind-body practises, inclusive activities and activities of social action. The design logic of 5.55 is inspired by the domostatic proposal of “Maison Dom-Ino (1915)” and simultaneously in line with the current typology of the common Greek constractual system of “Antiparohi”. The construction is based on a rectangular grid of 5.55 meters that extends across a six-story building and its rules may dictate the interior spaces, or they may be further divided. Finally, the grid is composed of three sections that have different structural operations in each case.

DISTINCT STRUCTURAL OPERATIONS: I. Composite Construction, II. Warren Truss Support, III. Reinforced Concrete Structure, IV. Metal Exterior Structure
